Iran to Pakistan overland Border…with gifts of marijuana.

Marijuana, wine and music are not things you expect to experience at the Iran to Pakistan land border. Or at least if you did it would probably be associated with jail time and arrest. The latter was yet to be seen.

After the short lived armed guard out of Iran and numerous check point stops we arrived at the Taftan border crossing a little later than we expected. Hot steaming cups of incredibly sugary tea awaited us at the registry office. An age old book the size of a suit case, which I can only think had been stolen from the Lord of the Rings film, was turned around and pointed at us. After reviewing the contents we filled in our names, nationality and other details. Despite our open protests more tea ensued.

It was around lunch time and after we slyly did a diabetes blood test to make sure neither of us would drop dead we asked what was going to happen next.

The registrar brusquely informed us ‘You are late, you must stay in compound, and we leave at 6 tomorrow morning’.

We proceeded, as instructed with a pointed finger, to the customs house to drink some more tea, sit in the shade for 5 minutes with several guards staring intently at us and eventually fill out some more paperwork. In all the excitement Peggy’s keys got locked inside the van. Of course, instantly twenty people appeared wanting to help. Left with little choice but to show my cards I used my handy nail clippers to shimmy the front door lock open. Embarrassed and wanting to get out of there quickly after showing everyone how easy it was to break into our home on wheels, I reversed straight off the edge of the road and the back wheels dropped down the steep embankment. Luckily the chassis of the van hitting the ground stopped any further backward motion and somehow I managed to wheel spin the van forward and pull away in what must have looked and sounded like a dusty bank job get away.

The prospect of lingering at this dirty, arid war torn border for the night was not nice at all. A friendly, one-toothed, skinny guard escorted us to ‘The compound’ where he assured us we would be safe from attack in the night. The four surrounding 25 foot mud walls offered nothing in the shade department but could have won an award for how well they cut out the nominal breeze.

We sat for 5 hours slowly baking in this man made clay cooker whilst chatting with a German couple Marco and Lena. They had left home only 3 weeks prior to our meeting and traveled with an eleven week old Rhodesian ridgeback puppy named Nala. She bounded about looking for someone to play with as the Pakistan guards ran squealing like school girls; AK47’s and combat knives remonstrating as they swung about their shoulders. They would try to coax her to come play with them but then become petrified at the last minute and run away, only encouraging her further.

Opening and sharing our last bottle of Pinot Grigio seemed a sensible option; the fridge was in full protest with the 120’f temperatures and somehow seemed to threaten to pack up at any point. As the sun dropped from the sky, an arm appeared through our mosquito-net curtain. “Mister, gift for you” the arm informed us. I held my hand out and into it dropped a healthy amount of Marijuana. After much debate about the possibility of this being a setup we decided upon the only sensible option, disposing of the evidence.

The next morning we woke up with hazy heads and tried to prepare ourselves mentally for what was to come. We were about to embark upon a drive considered one of the most dangerous in the world.

Yet, nothing in the world could have prepared us for what happened.
