Heading west into Guatemala!

We figured out Peggy’s problem, brushed the others under the carpet and headed West to San Ignacio anyway. One little closed road wasn’t going to put us off…and lets be honest, what else could possibly go wrong!
We made it safe and sound and managed to avoid any road works. We found a campsite and settled in with a beer. We made plans to cross the border the next day and went down to the river to yet again…try to catch a fish with a stick. If nothing else, my hubby to be is persistant! He waded in waist deep, stick above his head and watched hundreds of tiny fish swim by. He eventually gave up and we went to bed.
The next morning the camp we stayed at must have had a wild pig in their path as their butterflies all escaped from the sanctuary and we left as they all ran around with nets trying to catch them all.
We made it to the border and prepared ourselves for the nightmare…that almost didn’t come.
The process was calm and reasonable, we paid to have the tyres sprayed, to get our passports stamped, to enter the country and then last but not least to get Peggy in…but we had run out of money. They didn’t accept cards so we had to walk into Guatemala and 15 minutes up the street to the cash point to get some money. We know now that most border crossings become epic adventures and just got on with it. The only problem is that we never know how much the new money is worth. You just get used to people speaking English again in Belize and the Belize Dollar and then we start on Guatemalan Quetzals, so when we finally got paid up for Peggy, set off and got stopped and charged Q50 for crossing the bridge, Alex was outraged. He asked the lady what the charge was for, she explained it was for crossing the bridge. Alex asked if there was a way around the bridge and she said no. While this exhange was going on cars, buses, bikes were all whizzing past so Alex asked her why these others were not paying! Eventually she charged someone else and a man came over and explained in English that as we were one off visitors we got charged more than everyone else. It turns out that Q50 is only ยฃ5 but when you are fresh over the border there is just no way of knowing!
We paid and left for our first stop in the country, Flores.
The scenery on the drive was stunning. Like driving through tropical rainforest but on pristine roads. Pigs, dogs, sheep, wild horses and cows roam around the sides of the streets and vendors try to flog their wares at spots along the way.
We drove onto the little island of Flores and it reminded us of Italy. Narrow cobbled streets ran off the main road which went in a loop all the way around the tiny island.

We found a spot to park up, made dinner and instantly felt like we could relax here.

The border crossings get more bizarre with each one! Glad you have arrived in Guatemala safely; too bad Alex was unsuccessful in spearing you that fish…practice makes perfect….keep at it Alex and one day you’ll have a successful catch ๐Ÿ™‚

Gee…you are actually traveling on smooth roads…you’ll miss all the ruts and bumps…NOT. Beautiful sunset in your final shot….no money can buy beauty like that.

    Happy trails! xx

I wonder if the Quetzels are named after the same dude who ruled over those Mayan pyramids we saw in Mexico. Possible? His name was Quetzalocal (or something like that….)
