How it Began

Back in the year 2000 two young adults met. They didn’t know it at the time, but that moment changed their lives forever. It sounds like a cliche and very cheesy but its completely true!

The two young adults were Lisa and Alex. They were friends and drinking buddies for years and then in 2003 life and work separated them for 5 whole years!

One fateful day in 2008 Alex sent Lisa a text message asking if she would like to meet up for a drink. She said yes and they have never been apart since.

After a year of living together Alex asked Lisa if she would like to move to Australia. Again, she said yes! They put their home and Alex’s business up for sale and worked all hours to save the money to make their dreams come true.

With all the excitement of the future ahead of them, they decided that they would travel the world on their way to Australia and look for a place to get married, of course they would document their experiences in a blog to share their findings with family and friends back home!

So finally… 3 years later… business sold, house rented, jobs quit and their joint 60 years of life packed into boxes, sold and donated… their journey began…with another added twist! Just a few weeks before they where due to leave, a drunken idea remained stuck in their heads. How could they write about where to get married without actually having a wedding…everywhere they went!?

In the final weeks leading up to their departure Alex planned their first wedding AS A TOTAL SECRET and the day before they left their lives forever Lisa was surprised by their first wedding…

We love all feedback and would love to hear yours!

  9. Alex & LIsa,
I just watched the 20/20 episode and fell in love…with YOU BOTH!!
I recently got engaged, at age 43, to the Love of My Life. We went to Grammar School together and met again at a reunion in August 2009. He moved in 11 days after our reunion and We have been together since. Christmas Morning He proposed. For the first time in my life, I plan to actually marry. He is who I knew I was waiting for and the true reason I would never marry, all of these years.
You both have these wonderful faces and personalities that beam with love and devotion. Sometimes, you can look into someones eyes and faces, and see the radiance.
God Bless you both on your exciting journey!! How brave and wonderful! Many wishes for a long, healthy and happy life together filled with love, family and friends!! Thank You for the smile today! Much Love,
Maria (My other 1/2 is Vinny!)

  11. […] 14. Jenna says:

Do the words “cultural appropriation” mean nothing to you guys?

    • Lisa & Alex says:

Hi Jenna, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
Cultural appropriation, to me, is the adoption of elements of one culture by members of a different cultural group. Specifically, the use by cultural outsiders of a minority, oppressed culture’s symbols or other cultural elements. Which is, I am sure, what it means to you. I am assuming from the tone of your question that you are suggesting that we are ‘appropriating’ the cultures we explore without permission, or a blessing from the cultural group in question. HOWEVER, I am also sure that if you read through even just a few of the cultural and traditional weddings we have experienced, that you would understand that each country, each culture or tradition, is shared with us happily by a person of that culture.
For example we were offered a Maori welcome in New Zealand, we have been blessed by several Shamans and have had Mass dedicated to us in Colombia. Not one of these cultures was forced into ‘sharing’ these experiences with us, they chose to. And majoritively, they approached us, inviting to share in their culture as proud, welcoming individuals.

  15. Rosie says:
